Key Takeaways:
- Start Slow and Steady: Begin your job search journey by gradually increasing your LinkedIn activity. Start with a simple task: spend 15 minutes daily scrolling through your LinkedIn feed.
- Curate Your Feed: As you scroll, pay attention to the content. Like posts that resonate with you, whether it's due to shared values, industry insights, or personal connections. Simultaneously, unfollow accounts that aren't relevant to your career goals. This helps refine your feed and expose you to more targeted content.
- Train the Algorithm: By liking posts, you're essentially training LinkedIn's algorithm to understand your interests. This subtle action will lead to a more personalized feed, filled with content that aligns with your career aspirations.
- Build Subtle Visibility: While you're engaging with content, you're also increasing your visibility on the platform. Even a simple like can draw attention to your profile. This low-effort, high-impact strategy can help you connect with potential employers and industry professionals.
- Prioritize Networking: Networking is a powerful tool, especially for experienced professionals. LinkedIn offers a platform to build and nurture relationships. By actively engaging with others, you can increase your chances of landing your next job opportunity.

Welcome back in today's episode. I want to talk about how to hit the ground running in your job search. And I know that if you are in a career transition, that's not by choice, meaning you've been asked to leave the company, you're going through a lot in your head right now, but I want to let you know that as soon as you feel comfortable getting back into LinkedIn and getting your online working efforts started, you're The better.
And I remember being in career transition myself. It took me about a week. The last time I've gone through this career transition myself, it took me about a week of just being offline entirely and then jumping back in. And maybe you're like many people who are using LinkedIn in that you're not very active.
Does that sound like you? It might sound like you, right? And I know that there's a lot of people that when they first got on LinkedIn, it was when they were making a job change and they really haven't used LinkedIn too much over the years because they weren't job seeking. Now, all of a sudden you're in career transition and you're back in this boat that you never wanted to be on in the first place.
And you don't want people to know that you're on the boat either, right? But the irony is that at this point in your career, if you are experienced, rich, if you're age 40 plus 50 plus, or 60 plus, the reality of the situation is that your next job opportunity is probably going to come by way of referral or by you finding the job and finding somebody who's going to help you get through that stack of resumes that the hiring manager has already received.
So networking is really going to be important for you. So here's what I'm going to recommend to you. I'm not going to say go out the boat and, Amp up your LinkedIn profile today because maybe you're not quite in the headspace to do so yet. But I want to encourage you to dip your toe in the water, and here's how you do first, make sure you've got the LinkedIn app on your phone. You're going to be using LinkedIn a lot more these days while you're in career transition. And I also want to encourage you to be treating your job search like a full time job. Now it's not to say you have to work 40 hours a week on your job search, but you do need to dedicate time every business day searching for a job and being visible on LinkedIn.
So that's what we're going to focus on, being visible on LinkedIn, because right now you might be invisible. You're not really active, you're not participating in the homepage feed, you're not posting at all. But we want to start to ease back into the LinkedIn homepage feed. And here's the easiest way of doing so.
Get ready for this. Grab a timer, 15 minutes. You can use the stopwatch app on your phone if you'd like. And I want you to spend 15 minutes every single business day, Monday through Friday. And I want you to spend that time in the LinkedIn homepage feed. Now, right now, if you're not active at all on LinkedIn, LinkedIn's not going to know what to share you with you in the homepage.
It's almost like it's throwing spaghetti at a wall and they're trying to feel what's going to stick for this person, right? So we need to retrain the algorithm to show us more relevant content. So as you're going through the homepage feed, and maybe you can do this right now, Maybe you can scroll through the homepage feed as you're listening to this podcast.
If you see posts that you can relate to, maybe they're by people that, people that you support. Maybe there's something from an experience perspective, from the industry perspective, maybe they're sharing some values about leadership and things like that. I want you to get in the habit of just giving it a quick like.
Now, if you get a little bit more brave, you can change the reaction from like to applause or something else in there. But a like is perfectly fine as a reaction. Now, what will happen is two different things. When you start liking posts, first and foremost, you're training the algorithm what you want to see more of.
So there's some smart science behind all of this and I can't explain it exactly, but I do know that the more things that you engage with by giving it a and a reaction, and even comments, we'll talk about that later. The more likely that you're going to see more of those posts by that person or about that topic in your homepage feed.
So you're going to stop seeing things that are irrelevant, and you're going to start to see more things that are more relevant. So right now we're really curating our content, our homepage feed by liking things. Now, another thing that you can do as you're going through your homepage feed, if you start to see posts from people that just aren't relevant to you, maybe these are former coworkers from eons ago and really in a different industry entirely.
What you can do is in the upper right hand corner of their post, you can click on the three dots and then there is an unfollow. So when you unfollow a person, it just means that their posts will not come up in your homepage feed anymore. They won't get notified that you're unfollowing them. They're not going to get an email or a direct message.
You just won't come up in their homepage feed anymore. Okay. And it's a way of staying connected to a person, but telling the LinkedIn homepage, page. Hey, this is not something that's interesting to me. So again, I want you to spend 15 minutes scrolling through. And when you do this exercise, I want you to practice doing this book from both the desktop view, and then also open up your LinkedIn app on your phone.
You're going to notice something a little bit unique, and that is that you're going to see different content from the homepage on the desktop than you are in the mobile app. And I don't know why. I just, my, my guess is there are two different engineering teams that are coming up with these things. I don't know, but there's different content from both places.
So do make sure that you're starting to do that and spend 15 minutes in the homepage feed every day. Now I'm going to start off this podcast really easy for you, because I remember where my mind was, where my headspace was when I was first. Thrown out back there into the job search market and not really ready to put myself out there just yet.
So that's why I want to encourage you to start slow in on the process and simply spend 15 minutes every single business day, Monday through Friday in the homepage feed, scrolling through when you see something that catches your attention and it does resonate with you, it aligns with your values, your expertise, or you're supportive of the person who posted it.
give it a okay. And this is just a real subtle way of building up that algorithm. So it's showing you more relevant content. And the other thing is in a very subtle way, you're starting to build up visibility for yourself on the platform and a not in a, in their face type of a way, but more of a subtle way in the background, you may notice sometimes in your homepage feed, that LinkedIn will give you notifications that will say, For example, Richard so and so liked this post.
So you'll start to subtly appear in the background there without having to post. So I liked this particular technique because it's really easy to do. And the flip side of that again, is to unfollow people. Cause that will start to curate your feed. So you start to get more relevant things from more relevant people in your network.
Now we're going to build upon some of these other strategies as you continue to listen to the podcast. But I want to start you slow and I want to start you with something that feels. Doable. I hope you feel this is doable. I want this to feel easy for you. I want this to feel natural for you, but you do need to take action.
This is going to be a way to start to supercharge your presence, but we're going to do so quietly at first and subtly using the and the reaction button. Later on, we're going to talk about using commenting as a strategy as well. All right, my friend, I am so glad that you're listening to the podcast here.
I hope you're enjoying these episodes. If we are connected on LinkedIn, send me a direct message and let me know. And perhaps if you know someone else who is in career transition and experience rich, I'd love it if you could share an episode of the podcast with them as well. You never know who you're going to help and you can brighten their day.
With that said, I look forward to seeing you on LinkedIn.
